SmashTunes for Music & Spotify App Reviews
Useless. Goes into a spinning ball. Glad it only cost discover this. Good idea but doesn’t work properly. Will play, but if you want o skip a song, good luck. Too friggin long looking at a spinning ball.
The main reason I bought this app was to see the song that’s playing in the menu and it delivered flawlessly. Playback controls are nice perks, too. My only complaint so far is the lack of support for new Apple Music functionality: likes for songs (ratings are here, but they’re not that relevant anymore) and the ability to start a radio from the current song. Dislikes are coming in Sierra and they would be nice to have, too. Still, the app does its main job perfectly, so I definitely recommend to buy it.
RE: Version 3.1.4 Nice to see updates over the years I’ve owned this, thanks! However, recently Playlist menu isn’t showing my playlists any more….that makes me sad. From my version 2 review…. I’ve been using a different iTunes control program for many years…that has been abandoned. I found SmashTunes by luck. I reallly wanted several simple things. A. The ability to play any of my playlists, from a menu. B. The ability to at least stop and start the music with a hotkey. C. I didn’t want to have to swich into iTunes to do the above. I wish it did more things and was more flexible and customizable…but hey, it does EXACTLY what i NEED so I’m happy to have purchased it. When there are upgrades I’ll enjoy them. Thanks SmashBits.
Love the accessibility to iTunes from any space
This app no longer works for me in OS 10.7.4. It was working fine in 10.7.3. Nevermind, it seems OK again.
I wanted a simple app to tell me what song is playing. This app needs to do a ticker effect when the song info is too long instead of shortening or pushing out menu icons. This app is overpriced and total garbage. Not even worth more than $0.99. Im getting my money back.
hangs, takes up too much memory
never worked
I updated my review to reflect that the developer added several new fields that can be displayed including Album Artist and Composer… which is great if you have a lot of classical music in your collection. Ive tried several of the App Store menu/music bars and this is by far the best for my needs. You can choose up to 200 characters to be shown in the menu bar including Artist, Title, Rating, Duration, Album, Year, and the 2 others I mentioned. For the other reviewer who complained that there wasnt enough space, well I guess theres never enough space but Im able to display all the fields I need with room left over. Perhaps removing some other icons from the menu bar would help. Scrolling would be cool though. Anyway, I find SmashTunes works great and the developer has been responsive.
I use this constantly and is always better to get a quick look at whats playing by just looking at menu bar. But i need one feature. Currently you can have duration show in the bar, but i wish that it would countdown as the song plays so i can at a glance know exactly how much is left in the song. Why this isnt there already is beyond me. Please add!! I could also see a progress bar sit below the the info displayed to show song progress if the countdown is too distracting. A subtly line starting on the left and filling to the right as the song goes on would be awesome.
RE: Version 2.2.2 I’ve been using a different iTunes control program for many years…that has been abandoned. I found SmashTunes by luck. I reallly wanted several simple things. A. Only problem I had with it before was that it would disappear if there wasnt enough room - now with the auto-shortening feature, it works perfectly in my crowded menu bar!
I was looking for an app that would do 2 things: 1) put info about the track playing in iTunes in my menu bar; and, 2) display cover art. This app does that, plus allows me to control iTunes playback from the menu bar. Couldn’t be happier!
version 3.0.2 appears not to work with OS X 10.6.8, So, Ive retrod to an earlier version. Also, when songs change or when stopping or starting something, the app causes several annoying beeps to play. Otherwise, I really like it and continue to use it, even with a couple annoyances.
For something so simple it is disappointing that it often fails. I would say 20% of the time it does not show the song which is SUPER annoying. Please fix it!
I was looking for a simple app to display what I was currently listening to on Spotify on my desktop, along with some menu bar controls without having to open the Spotify app itself. SmashTunes does just that, and with a reasonable price tag. Easy control and has enough preferences available to make it worthwhile. Allows the user to determine which information is displayed in the menu bar, and the album art can be dragged to any place on the desktop with a simple click and drag.
Doesn’t work on Tahoe
Plz fix it
Perfect
The developer has crafted a wonderful app with frequent updates. He listens to suggestions. It makes a huge difference for enjoying the music and rating it more easily.
Great
Works great, but I really wanted to have album artwork as an option to display in the menu bar. Would be great to see that.
Amazing app
Exactly what i was looking for. A mininal yet customizable interface for my music. Beside the basic info like Title, Artist, ect... You can even customize and sort what's being display on the menu bar. Pair this with BarTunes and you're golden.
Nope dont do it
The app is good. does what it says perfectly, nothing more, nothing less. But instead of being free or charging a one time 1-3 dollars which I am always happy to pay, they want you to pay them a yearly subscription fee. If you dont the app breaks after about an hour.
Edit: FIxed. Great app once again. Paid for subscription still getting aanoying Support Messsage
Please remove this, I paid and I'm still seeing your support message. Edit: Thanks for the response and fix. All good now
Where Sizzling Keys left off....
This app covers everything Sizzling Keys did, and way more!!! Clean interface, preferences and sturdy. THANK YOU Dev.
Excellent App that is Better Than Apple Music
This app fulfills a huge gaping hole in the current functionality of the Mac. Currently, there is no way to keep an ever-present display of your misic on the screen. Now, with SmashTunes there finally is! I love being able to see the full name of the track, artist, and album—as well as duration. And with one click I can see the album artwork—something that is completely missing from Apple main Music app right now. With SmashTunes I barely have to interact with Apple's Music app and that is a good thing!
What a Marvalious App!
I was looking for an easy way to see what was playing and rate my music. I didn't expect convenient features of hot keys (they work for me Meemaw312), easy customization, great readable font, and even cover art if you want it. Five stars if my suggestions for time remaing count down and dimmed stars for no rating make it. :)
Playlists from the Menu Bar!
The functionality of this app goes above and beyond similar menu bar iTunes controllers that just let you pause and skip. You can see a menu of all your playlists as well and start them directly from the menu bar. This is way more efficient than going back into iTunes just to change a playlist.
global hotkeys do not work
Input window is blank no matter what.
v3.2
Doesn’t open on my iMac. I have been a long time user and this disappoints.
Does what it says

Clean and simple, does the job

Had a few simple expectations, and SmashTunes delivered.

Love the app but...

Nice program
Nice program. Keep up the good work!
